Building a Website

Webs.com

Building your own website can be profitable. I don't have one but I've been researching some companies to see what it costs and how to do it. It really isn't all that much different than setting up a blog (see links below for free blogging sites) but it does cost money. The fees vary but aren't very expensive. Let me tell you about a few companies that I researched.

Webs.com is very easy to use. You can build your website in a short amount of time. This is one company that doesn't charge anything if you want only one page. This is their "starter package." With the starter package you can chose from a variety of templates, add a logo with your company name, and use their site builder to do most of the work for you. You will want to upgrade to their $3.75 a month plan or the $7.50 a month plan to add more features. The $3.75 a month plan gives you free ad space and customer support. The $7.50 plan gives you your domain name and an email address with your domain name included in it, plus what is included in the other plans.

Why have your own website? Both small and large businesses have their own websites. This is where they advertise to help their business grow. You don't have to have your own business to have a website though. Those of us who have blogs or articles like this one can make money with their own website. If your area of expertise is alternative remedies using herbs and vitamins then having a website could be profitable. You can sell products from an affiliate store on the website and make money. It's the same with any area of interest. Whether you're interest is in the field of electronics, antiques, recipes, music, pets or any other topic, you can share your knowledge with millions of people. Your income comes from views and ad clicks. This is why you may want to start out with a package that offers ad space. Most of your income comes from the ads and your commission on sales that take place through Amazon or Ebay by selling their products. You can also place links on your website to other articles you have written and promote your website with the use of social network sites like Facebook or Twitter.

GoDaddy.com

This is a popular web hosting company. There's no free package. The most inexpensive plan costs $4.95 a month. You can get up to 3 domains with this plan. Your domain name is registered for a year, you get a "get started guide," a choice of templates, your own personal email address, 24/7 customer support, and the ability to advertise your affiliate stores. You can also earn a commission for referrals to their website. For a larger fee you can get an advertising banner, more domains names, a photo album and "for sale" pages.

Bluehost.com is another web hosting site I looked into. It appears to be quite easy to set up a website. For $5.95 a month you get an instant start up guide, your choice of templates, unlimited domain hosting, your own email account with your domain included to draw attention to your website, and $75.00 in free google credit. You can place ads on your website just like the other companies I've mentioned. They have a money back guarantee if for some reason you're not satisfied.

Useful information! I have 2 websites, one for affiliate marketing and other for online store. I like godaddy.com.

Having online store cost more because you have to choose company name and merchant account. You have to pay 29.99 /month to have merchant account and minimum annual tax $800 to have company even you earn zero. I would suggest try building website for affiliate first.

Wonderfully informative Hub -- I have our websites on Weebly.com and find them to be exceptional. Must admit I wasn't all that pleased with GoDaddy and moved but lots of folks love it. Thanks for all the info -- voted up. Best, Sis

Go Daddy seems to be a little more complicated to set up, plus they charge extra fees for this and that. I choose them because I read an article on the web by someone who loves them and recommended using them.

One of the benefits to going with one of these "build it yourself from templates" companies is that the support is included, you don't worry about hackers - the company does. Wordpress is a very popular website builder that you can drop into a hosting plan for a powerful blog. There is a learning curve of course, so just using templates is probably the way to go. I have tried blogspot but I do find it limiting.

And building by hand is really fun but also very time consuming and not very efficient if you just wanted to get started writing a blog.

You offer good choices - thank you.

Nice to see you, Alexander. I tried Word Press.com and found it very difficult to figure out. Blog Spot is more my speed. (:

I need to do something about this.Have my own built with Serif. Can't use my WordPress blog and don't want to stop to try to learn. What is the advantage of a site over using HubPages?

I would say that having multiple streams of income is best rather than working on just one site. I have 3 blogs and I write for Hub Pages and Textbroker. If you have time to work on more than one site, rather, if you really want to make money, you probably should do this.

Great tips SusieQ42. Starting your own online business is a trick. I attempted to run a website (a very complex one), and it ended up failing. However, if you know what your doing, have people to help you, and remember to keep it simple, it is definitely a great way to make money and have fun.

Thanks for sharing!

Some are very confusing to set up. I like to keep it simple. If I can't figure it out I give it up, but I wouldn't consider it as a failure, rather a learning experience.
