Antiques and Collectibles

I started collecting old books last year. I found them in antique stores, yard sales and the Library. The last book I found was a steal, Silas Marner by George Elliot, published in 1899 for only $2.00! I primarily look for classics, the older the better. I found the first edition of Winnie the Pooh , The Complete Works of Shakespeare, 1973 and Drift and Mastery by Walter Lipmann, pub'd in 1917. Sometimes I keep my books, sometimes I give them away as Christmas gifts.

I've been to many yard sales and have seen dishes, vases and other old items but I was never sure if they were worth anything so I finally purchased an Antiques and Collectibles price guide. I've listed some of them for you. The prices are not set in stone because of condition and age.

Hummel Figurines

Look for a mark on the bottom, the oldest Hummel figurines (1935 - 1949) is a rounded crown with a stick figure laying down underneath it with a C through it. Other marks are v's with bumble bees over top of them. You may also see the words Boebel W. Germany with the v and bumble bee.

Hummel Figurines are usually of children. You may see Puppy Love, Little Fiddler, Bookworm, Sensitive Hunter, Flower Madonna, Heavenly Angel, White, Brown or Blue Guardian Angel, or the Child Jesus. There are many more figurines, too many to list! They are worth anywhere from $50.00 to $1,000.00.

Cameras

Do you own an antique camera? Well, if you do then here is a partial list of cameras with their approximate prices:

Bell and Howell Foton- $1,000.00, Baldi- $100.00, ASR Foto-Disc- $500 to $1,000.00, Goltz and Breutmann- $200 to $400.00, Gray- $200 to $400.00, Hare Stereo- $1,000. to $4,000.00, Marion Soho Feflex- $400. to $800.00

Pottery

Roseville pottery made pitchers, vases and baskets. The baskets you can look for are Apple Blossom, Bleeding Heart, Clematis, Magnolia, Pinecone, Water Lily, White Rose and more.

Watt made kitchenware pottery from 1986 to 1965. Pie plates, bowls, plates, platters, creamers , ice buckets and book ends are worth anywhere from $20. to $100.00, depending on condition. Watt crocks were made in the 1920's.

Red Wing Pottery made Bob White cookie jars, salt and pepper shakers, teapots, butter dishes, plates and gravy boats. They were made in 1955.

Fondosa was also made by Red Wing Pottery in 1939. (mostly kitchenware) Prices range from $10. to $100.

Other pottery names to look for are George Ohr- 1880's to 1906, Paden City- 1914 to 1936, Newcomb- look for an NC on bottom; these are worth $1,000.00 and up , Niloak- 1920's to 1946 and Lladro Figurines.

Steuben glassware: Look for a small s or the word Steuben printed on the bottom. Look for candlesticks, vases and bowls. The model # may also be found on the bottom. Prices vary from $30.00 to thousands of dollars.

I love antiques and especially old books and am always looking at estate sales for that one thing that catches my eye and is a part of antiquity.

You never know where they've been...whose house they've been in, whose hands have turned those pages! I love them too!

I love garage sale-ing on the weekends. When we go to our farm in MI we go to many barn sales and church sales. I also collect old books, mostly for my boyfriend-he likes the political ones. Great hub!

Thank you for reading it! Books are great...wonder what'll happen to our precious with the oncoming of the new "e-books"?

I love searching for rare books at thrift stores and garage sales. A couple of years ago I found a 1950s paperback copy of "Junkie" by William S. Burroughs. Paid less than a dollar for it and sold it on eBay for over $50!

That's great! If we don't what to look for we won't find it. That's my motto anyway! Thanks for reading!

Voted up. Yes, it can be very interesting, collecting things, especially books. Mind you, for me there would be a thin dividing line between hoarding and collecting. Like, I've already had to get rid of some of my books. It works good ways, but as a business one would need not to get too attached to the things, for them to be a salable investment, really, I guess. Blessings.

I have given them to my family members as Christmas gifts. "Robert Frosts Book of Poems" is one that I wish I hadn't given away.

Hey, this must have been a valuable item: '...and miles to go before I sleep'... etc. Blessings.
