Julian Beever, Pavement Artist

By SusieQ42

The world famous pavement artist, Julian Beever, was born in 1959 in the UK. His career began in the 1990's. He first worked as an itinerate artist in his spare time to earn extra money so that he could travel to places like the United States, Paris, London, and around other cities in Europe. It didn't take him long to be noticed. After all, his artwork took place on city streets where crowds drew to him like flies! Julian Beever's artwork has shown up in Australia, Belgium, New York Cities Times Square, Paris, London, Buenos Aires, Vienna, and many other places around the world.

Julian's anamorphic pavement drawings allow the viewer to feel as though they are looking at a 3 dimensional picture. He draws from perspective and distorts the images so that can only be properly viewed from one place to get the true effect of the picture. Before beginning a piece, he draws it out on paper then draws the picture on pavement. He then takes several pictures of it with a wide angle lens, looking at it while he is working. In this way he is able to distort each object, thus making it appear as a 3 dimensional work of art.

Each picture he draws tells a story so that the public can better relate to them. Julian has become a master at his craft and each time he creates a new picture, the viewer can see how much more developed he has become as an artist. Julian also paints wall murals for companies with acrylic paints, and has written a book entitled "Pavement Chalk Artist" that was published in October, 2010. In his book you can view over 75 pavement pictures that he has created all around the world. See the Amazon link below to view Julian's book.

When asked what the most difficult part of his artistic endeavor in pavement art is, Julian says it is the hardship of working amongst police officers, construction crews, and city folk walking down the street. He also has to time his work just right to be sure not to work in the rain. Julian has had a popular web site for 9 months now that is worth over $5,000. This UK based artist is among several pavement artists, but his art work continues to be one of kind.

Seen Julians art quite a lot over the years and this hubpage does a good job of showing some of his work, well done. I like some of his fantasy pieces he has done were the floor has all fallen away and an image of hell with demons trying to climb out looked simply amazing!

Actually I was writing my "preschooler's Activities" blog about sidewalk chalk and thought of him. Then I decided to do a little research and found all of his great works of art. Isn't he just amazing?

Wow, so incredibly real. An amazing talent, its such a shame his work isn't longer lasting, but then what better place than the footpath for all to enjoy. Thank you for bringing this artist to our attention. Great hub.

I don't know why he doesn't put some kind of finish over it so it would stay longer. I use a fixative on pastel drawings. Thanks for checking it out. I appreciate it!

Voted up.

Yes, but unfortunately it washes away when it rains. Too bad he doesn't put some kind of fixative on it to preserve it.

Thanks, really interesting to read how Julian achieves the perspective by using a wide angled lens.
