The Nutritional Benefits of Cabbage

By SusieQ42

Did you know that cabbage is very good for your health? Its nutritional benefits are amazing! This includes both common varieties of cabbage and oriental cabbage. Cabbage contains antioxidants that protect you from many types of cancer. They include bladder, breast, cervix, lung, mouth, throat, ovarian, prostate and stomach. When you get that little side order of cole slaw in the restaurant, be thankful and eat it up!

Cabbage contains absolutely no cholesterol. Not only that but it contains 33 mg. of calcium, 10 mg. magnesium, 16 mg. phosphorous, 172 mg. of potassium, 13 mg. sodium, 9 mg. vitamin A, and small amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.

Cabbage is a member of the cruciferous family. Not only cabbage but broccoli, kale, cauliflower, parsley, brussels sprouts, and other dark green leafy vegetables are all very nutritious and contain the many important vitamins and minerals listed above. So, eat that cabbage! Why not make up a batch of cole slaw, sauerkraut, cabbage soup or even cabbage juice? It will help you to stay healthy by giving your body many nutritious vitamins that it needs.

Yummy-yum. I love cabbage and eat it raw for snacks. Sometimes I cook it or do a quick saute and my son loves it that way. Susie, it is great to see these healthy food Hubs. Thank you very much.

Welcome Katy, Monkeyboy, and Hyphenbird! Thanks for stopping by. Funny how we don't really think about some of these kinds of veggies being so good for us. I didn't really either, until I decided to do some research.

I agree, Susie! I learned how to make coleslaw with a simple olive oil and vinegar dressing and shred a little carrot or red cabbage in for variation. It's crispy, filling, low calorie and nutritious. I like to serve it with roasted chicken to cut the oiliness of the meat.

I've been telling some folk recently how great cabbage is as a cancer fighter- one doesn't listen so good- and its great to see you've written on it SusieQ. Boiled cabbage done right is great. Not to crazy about kraut. I like vinegar cole slaw. Didn't know all of the nutrients in cabbage but do now. Thanks SusieQ.

I'm happy to see that you gleaned some useful info from this hub, Alastar. Many people don't think cabbage is nutritious. Thanks for reading.

Thanks - finding good heads of cabbage is tough now - many look shrunken. But purple cabbage is always good looking. My favorite is napa or savory cabbage.

I love coleslaw, but that is the only way I tend to eat cabbage. I had no idea it was so high in calcium and magnesium so I may try to find a few cabbage recipes to make from time-to-time. I just published an article on the health benefits of ginger; maybe I can find a recipe that uses both cabbage and ginger.

Thank you for this information SusieQ, though I don't mind cabbage, it's not in my list of favourite vegetables. Mmm, think I might just change my habits. Very informative and useful hub and voted as such.

Mountain Mike, Ktrapp, Fennelseed; Thank you all for reading and learning about cabbage! I should have put an image of Cabbage Patch Kids on this hub! (O: Coleslaw is great but about corn beef and cabbage? It does have many vitamins and so much better than supplements! I sometimes put ginger in my tea!

Cabbage is good for all our ailments, including the epizoodiac (what my mom used to say we had when we were "under the weather", boils, and warts on our noses. NOT! Just thought I'd pull a little Halloween trick on you. (: Thanks for reading.
